Having piloted an Asylum Seeker Program for women and men in Term 4 2013 and 2014, the River Nile has added to its core program offering with a Foundation English literacy tutoring program.
The Foundation English Program runs Monday – Friday from 10.00am – 12.00pm, with lunch, then 1-3 pm. Students work in small groups led by an EAL Teacher with support from volunteer tutors.
Originally designed specifically to cater for asylum seekers with young children who required care for the children while they studied English, the program has expanded to include tutoring to any women asylum seeker who approach us for assistance. Due to the overwhelming demand for our program, we ceased taking men to give priority to women, especially those with young children as they find it the most difficult to attend classes to progress their learning.
RNLC offers Childcare free-of-charge, in our licenced childcare centre, enabling women who are young mothers to attend classes while their children are cared for nearby.
River Nile also offers MYKI top-ups for Asylum Seekers to ensure public transport costs are not a barrier to their attendance. We also offer access to the staple food that is donated to us fortnightly by Foodbank Victoria.
